Bring out Yer Dead
Bring out yer dead.
The Tiger Lillies want to play!
If you are one of the lucky few to have seen this trio of troubadours perform, you already know that their shows are indeed a rare treat. These are special events, where you were either in the audience or you missed out. So take warning and book tickets as soon as you can. Further warnings could also be issued (e.g. not for the easily offended, highly religious, lovers of animals etc.) however I think that would be doing the band a disservice. They LOVE to provoke and tease. So please feel free to bring the local vicar, your mothers, aunties, pets and any children to the show. The Tiger Lillies are sure to be waiting!
Martyn Jacques (angel-voiced, accordion playing front man and song writer), Adrian Stout (upright Bass and toy sheep) and Adrian Huge (child’s drum kit and assorted plastic and wooden objects) make up the Tiger Lillies. They have recently completed their lucky for some 13th album (featuring no less than the Kronos Quartet) and continue to tour and wow audiences with their simply delicious, devilish music. Treading a fine line between Brecht/Weill opera, English music hall, Gypsy folk and even left-bank Parisian buskers, the Tiger Lillies are like no other band around.
One moment their blasphemous, perverse irreverence shocks (often leaving their audience in uncontrollable fits of laughter), the next they still the air with beautiful ballads of death, cruelty or depravity. They move between punk-like clown ditties to deadly serious storytellers in the blink of an eye. No fear of taboos, their subject matter includes rape, crucifixion, bestiality, murder or prostitution, more often than not with a hidden morality at the root of each song. Jacques has a wonderfully clear vision of the world’s inequality, if seen from an all too blood shot eye.
As a result, they captivate with every word and timeless sound they make. For fans (they have a cult following throughout many cities of the world) there is also the fun of being part of something that is so shocking, so naughty! The band certainly aim to push all limits, wanting to know how close to damnation each of us is willing to go. And if damnation is on the cards, the Tiger Lillies are taking the express elevator down. From listening to their gorgeous music, they appear to love every second of the ride!
Huge recognition came with their involvement on the junk opera “Shockheaded Peter”, which opened to rave reviews in England in 1998. The show toured the world over for four years (including in 1999 runs at Broadway's New Victory Theatre, and in 2001 the Piccadilly Theatre on London's West End). The show received two Olivier awards (the British equivalent of the Tony) including best supporting role in a musical to Jacques. However there remains a treasure box of jewels still to discover outside of this one project. Catch them while you can, and see what you have been missing!
The naughty minstrels are soon to be found playing the following dates: +++ (France and Italy) to promote their latest collection of songs from the "The Sea" and “The Gorey End”.
